The principal activity of Uchumi is that of operating retail supermarkets in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. On 31 May 2006, the Board and Management of Uchumi Supermarkets Limited passed a resolution to cease trading and the company operations were shut down, a closure that lasted from 1 June 2006 to 14 July 2006. Following the decision to cease trading, the company’s debenture holders were compelled to appoint Receiver Managers on 02 June 2006. On 4 March 2010, the debenture holders lifted the receivership. The company’s shares resumed trading at the Nairobi Stock Exchange from 31 May 2011 after being approved by the Capital Markets Authority of Kenya. The Company began trading on the Rwanda Securities Exchange on 14 October 2013.
